Beti Bachao Beti Padhao and Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana in India

Currently, there are several Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaigns running across India. These initiatives aim to educate the mothers of school going children and make them aware of the importance of education. Some of the schemes include ‘Selfie with Daughter’ and ‘Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana’. These campaigns also involve street plays to raise awareness about the schemes. The article discusses the challenges and issues associated with these campaigns.

‘Selfie With Daughter’ initiative

During the International Day of the Girl Child, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised a sarpanch in Haryana for taking a selfie with his daughter. The selfie gained worldwide popularity and was later made into a campaign called the Selfie With Daughter initiative.

Sunil Jaglan is a sarpanch from Bibipur village in Haryana. He took a selfie with his daughter Nandini on June 9th and it soon became famous. It sparked off a campaign for a better sex ratio in the country.

Beti Bachao Beti Padhao is a national campaign that was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 22nd, 2015. The programme aims to protect and educate the girl child. It also aims to prevent gender biased sex selective elimination. The campaign was launched with an initial funding of Rs 100 crore.

Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana

Developed in 2015 by the Government of India, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) is a savings scheme for the girl child. It provides funds for her education and marriage. It is a part of the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign launched by the Modi government.

The Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana is a saving scheme that encourages parents to save for the education and marriage expenses of their girl child. The account can be opened at any government approved post office or authorised branch of commercial banks.

The initial interest rate for the account was set at 9.1 per cent. It was revised to 8.6 per cent in FY 2016-17 and 8.3 per cent in FY 2017-18. This interest rate is exempt from income tax.

Challenges of Mindsets and Deep Rooted Patriarchy

Patriarchy is a system of practices in which men dominate women. In today’s world, women face discrimination both inside and outside the home.

A patriarchy free society is not possible without changing the way society thinks about women. In India, the patriarchal mind-set is one of the main reasons for discrimination against women. This has become an age old cultural phenomenon. In order to change this mindset, it is important for the government to focus on changing the way society thinks.

Several government programmes have been tried to address the problems of women. These include the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme, a campaign launched by the Ministry of Minority Affairs to check the drop-out rate of girls in secondary education. These programmes are not designed to address the root causes of discrimination against women. However, these are meant to change the mindset of people towards the girl child.

Poor utilisation of funds

Despite the fact that Beti Bachao Beti Padhao and Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana is the flagship program of the government, it is apparent that it is being poorly utilised. According to the report of the parliamentary committee on empowerment of women, states have underutilized funds allocated for the scheme.

According to the report, nine states have received more than Rs.10 crore each, while the government has spent about 80% of the funds on media campaigns. UTs such as Puducherry, Kerala and Karnataka have utilized over 70% of the funds.

Street plays promote awareness of the scheme
